Uganda Gets New Reggae Festival
The debut edition of Camp Reggae festival will be held at Kaazi Scout National Camping Ground in Kampala, Uganda from 1 to 3 October.
The organiser Trix Souljah, who doubles as a visual artist and producer, says the event’s mission is to provide cultural entertainment through reggae music, whose artists spread the message of love, hope, and equality.
The line-up is made of 29 reggae DJs and musicians. They include Blessed San, Empress Tutu, Generale C’zarbu, C Wyne Nalukalala, Tizo Kalalankoma, Henry Kayonga, Bushman Papashante, Fabie Reasons, Manson Bulubembe, Roots Natty, Rwamafa Lewis, Phitzo Kiganda and Nilotika Cultural Ensemble. Others are Ras Bk, DJ Ras Brown, DJ King Shango, DJ Storm, DJ Harsh, DJ Splif and DJ Skaface.
“The event is for the lovers of nature, art and music,” Trix Souljah told Music In Africa. “From the ticket sales, we expect a good crowd. People want to see the musicians because they like the music and not because they have a hit song on the radio.”
He added: “The event is not just a platform for performing artists; we are also providing space for artisans to sell their products because most of them cannot afford to rent shops. Moreover, the government recently announced that it is illegal for these artists to vend items in Kampala.”
Commenting on the state of reggae music in the country, Souljah said: “Reggae music fans continue to grow, especially young people who identify with the messages being shared by the artists. The media has also introduced a few reggae shows, which means that this new interest will lead to further growth.”
