Participate In Survey To Investigate Musculoskeletal Disorders In SA Musicians

Back

South African masters student at Rhodes University Erryn Green is conducting a study to investigate performance-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs) among musicians. As part of the study, Green is asking South African musicians across all musical genres to participate in a survey(link is external) that will inform her research, which will be published on Music In Africa upon its completion.

The purpose of the study is to establish prevalence rates of PRMDs in instrumental musicians and to investigate the systemic nature of the risk factors that these musicians are exposed to.

It will contribute towards a better understanding of PRMDs in musicians, providing baseline data to enable and promote future research, thereby ultimately reducing the burden of PRMDs for musicians.

To participate in this study, individuals will be required to complete the online survey, which will take between 20 and 40 minutes. The survey consists of the Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity and Interference Questionnaire for Musicians (MPIIQM), selected questions from the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire, and questions based on existing literature and scientific evidence.

Participation requirements

To participate in this survey, individuals must:

  • Be over the age of 18.
  • Regularly play an instrument that contributes to their income or intended future career. This includes music students, informal musicians, semi-professional musicians, music teachers and/or performers, full-time or part-time musicians, freelance musicians, or anyone who plans on using their music for income purposes.
  • Have access to the internet to be able to view and answer the survey.
  • Have a good command of the English language.
  • Be a resident of South Africa.

All musicians are encouraged to participate in the survey even if they have never experienced musculoskeletal symptoms.
